Welcome and Introductions




             

                                       



Dear Pupils and Staff at Horotiu School,

We have all been studying New Zealand over the last 8 weeks and will be presenting our 'Perfect New Zealand Experience' to some travel agents who will be visiting our school next week.  The children at Fordham will be using this blog to leave comments and questions for you to answer, please also feel free to ask our children any questions you may have of life here in England. 
Our policy on e-safety and blogs means that we don't use surnames in our blog post so you might just see initials or first names only signed as anonymous.
We really look forward to hearing from you!  Please ask questions and comments in the comments to this post and I will aim to add another post next week about a particular area both our schools maybe able to discuss.

    I would like to ask about sport in your school. I have always been impressed with the quality of New Zealand's rugby and cricket team, do you focus heavily on sport in school?

    Hi Mr Wainwright
    We do have Fitness every day for 30 minutes and this term (being summer) we've focussed on swimming. We have school soccer teams and in-line hockey teams but we don't field netball or rugby teams as many of our children play in club teams which we don't want to dilute by competing with them. In winter we do gymnastics and Jump-Jam (aerobic dance to music much like Jazzercise) and large ball games. We have cross country in Term 2 and Athletics in Term 4.

    We have some very strong club teams for children and many bigger "city" schools do have some very strong rugby teams and training. what sports do your students play there.

      I love the sound of 30 minutes of fitness everyday, I did something similar in my previous school to my 1980s DVD. The sports we mostly focus on are: football, netball, gymnastics, dance and athletics. We have started professional squash coaching this year and the children are really enjoying this.

      2nd time lucky! Just wrote a big reply to you and then found for some reason it didn't show up AAAGH!

      So anyway thanks for your lovely emails which were great reading. We have been really busy here with a regatta last week and a triathalon today. Regattamight be differnet to what you think as ours is down the local Waiakto River or Waikato Awa (as its called in Maori). Our vessels are canoes called waka kopapa which seat 5 paddlers and a steerer. We competed against other local schools and did quite well against stiff competition. Our boys team won Silver in their age group and one of our girls teams came 4th out of 27 teams. We were really happy with our results.

      Today we have had a traithalon which the whole school joined in. We had running,cycling and swimming events and everyone did reaaly well.

      Tomorrow morning is the beginning of the annual Balloons over Waikato display which lasts for 4 days so our skies will be filled with hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes. Do google this if you get a chance - its so exciting to see the brightly coloured and different shaped ballons that come form all over the country and from around the world. Some students will probably head down to Innes Common in Hamilton for breakfast and to see the 6:30 am lift off. Some years some ballons land on our school field and we get to see the balloon up close ad personal.

      Anyhow we will try and get our class replies to your emails done this week as you have been waiting for us...so fingers crossed you get a reply in the next 48 hours.

      We are sorry that many of the children's replies have been lost, we can't have posted properly as everyone did write to their pen-pal today (unless they were absent form school). Sorry if you haven't received a response. We had to share our computer suite with two other classes and somehow things have gone wrong. We will try and redo tomorrow or on Monday.

      There are some people at Fordham who only gave us an initial and our students weren't sure who they were writing to. If you'd like to give us just your first name then our students can write back to the pen-pal Mrs Bowles and I set up. Hope to get the rest of letters to you very soon and look forward to hearing back from you.

      Thank you so much for all your wonderful replies! It is so good to hear about life in New Zealand. We did a Skype call yesterday at 8.30am here to our Church leader who is on holiday in New Zealand and saw the moon over the beach where she was staying, wonderful.
      The children will hopefully reply but we finish for Easter tomorrow and return on 13th April. Hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and we can stay in contact next term..

      Hi Again Everyone there.

      Where abouts is your church leader staying (which beach in NZ)? What denomination is your school and what is the title given to your church leader? We are a state school and therefore don't provide religious instruction.

      Hope you all have a lovely Easter and a well earned holiday. We break up for the end of the term on Thursday 2nd April. We have Good Friday off and then two weeks of school holidays before recommencing for our second term April 20th. We look forward to making contact with you all again then.

      we sing lots in Kapa Haka I like finding big huge spiders we our regatta not l=so long a ago we had our school triathalon yesterday everyone did it out of our hole school and our gala like 4 weeks ago we raised a lot of money to buy sports gear and education for our school we made 18,000 dollars.

      How are you?
      Your sports sound really fun, we would love to do sports for 30 mins each day!
      At our school we have recently been doing gymnastics aswell, although now we are doing yoga.
      We also do lots of football and High 5 netball, we are doing a netball tournament soon.
      Our 'Perfect New Zealand Experience' went really well and the judges couldn't eat all the food we had prepared because there was so much! The finals are today and we are really excited.
      What are your favourite subjects at school? Ours are P.E and practical science.

      Kia ora [ means hello in Maori] my name is Hinerangi and I am 9 years old. At my school I enjoy playing on the gym equipment and swimming, but at home I enjoy horse riding and I also go and play netball for Panthers which is really fun. Wow your school sounds really fun and I would really love to learn how to do proper yoga. This term we have just started our Kapa Haka group which is a cultural thing for Maori and European and we express ourselves by singing with joy and anger also with props and actions. We have just had an amazing triatholon which was a success and nearly the whole school participating. we have had a successful gala and guess what we made $18.000 wow a lot. I wonder if you guys have galas at your school.

      Hello! In our school we do not do galas in our school but we have lots of different after and before school clubs such as, football, dance, gymnastics, karate and squash. We also do bikeabilaty during school time so that we can be safe to cycle on the roads. I am not having such a good day but speaking to you has made my day happy!       what subjects do you like and why. Answer, my favs subjects are: Writing, Te reo, and math's. I like these subjects because whenever I do it always sets me to a challenge and my knowledge will be able to build my confidence as well.

At school in Horotiu we are practicing for cross country it is coming up next term.     I am Jack , what is in-line hockey?My interest is football/soccer and I play at the weekends and in the week for Arsenal. My favourite subject is P.E, also if you didn't guess I support Arsenal! Yesterday we did our competition for the Perfect New Zealand Experience and I was in the All Blacks group and we served Passion friut and lemon curd roulade as our dessert and Crayfish and Mussels as our main course.

    Hello. Hola.

    I enjoy sports and video games. I mainly play football and I support Manchester United. My favourite subject at school is Geography, along with ICT and P.E. Yesterday we had a competition about our "Perfect New Zealand Experience" which we came joint 2nd place. The question I would like to ask is, is there any famous football club in New Zealand?

    Hi we do yoga and netball at school. What sports do you do at Horotiu? Yesterday at school we had an exciting day as two judges came in to judge our presentation about New Zealand.The judges couldn't eat all the food as there was so much. We served kiwi pavlova and blueberry cheesecake.

      Monique i have recently turned 11. My favourite sports are horse riding, gym and football but mostly horse riding. I looooovvvvveeeee horses and my granny lives on a farm down the road from us so i go to play there with my cousins most days. That sounds so cool hunting deers and pigs, the most i have ever hunted are pigeons:) same for my brother. I also have a dog bot she's a spaniel and is called Maya, and were getting a kitten soon!!!!!

      I am year 6 and have recently turned 11.My favourite sports are horse riding,gymnastics and football, but my favourite one is horse riding,i loovvveeee horses. That sound's really cool hunting deers and pigs, the most i've ever hunted is pigeons:) I've got two brothers William and Louis. William's hunted foxes a few times on the farm with my grandad but never managed to get one. We also have a dog her name is Maya and she's a spaniel. Were getting 2 kittens soon i cant wait.

    Hi Room 8 my name is Erran. My favorite subject is ICT i go to a club in Brain Tree Called Brain Tree Bowmen to do my hobby archery i have done it with my dad for nearly a year now. It is really fun i hope you give it a try and see that its fun but not simple, like a lot of people think it is. You need to focus and concentrate to do it you have to practice loads and get a good rhythm to shoot in the middle (gold) of the target and get a good grouping. Yesterday we did a competition for the perfect New Zealand experience my group the Kiwis (the bird) made it through to the finals (today is the finals) my group made a lamb hotpot and blueberry cheese cake. Is it nice in New Zealand? Have a nice day

      Hi its Taine here.I support Turangawaewae . Turangawaewae is a COOL team and my position is wing. Wing is about when you tuckle people and you run to score points and sometimes you usually show off. When you play rugby league you usually get injured and it really hurts. Oh by the way room 8 is my super rocking fun time classroom.

    Hello Horotiu! I was wondering if any of you like dance as dance is my absolute favourite thing to! I do disco freestyle dance and I am Grade 3. My favourite subject is P.E. because we do yoga and it really relaxes me and gets the stress of SATS away for half an hour! Whats your favourite subject? My favourite book is 'Girl Online' by Zoe Sugg (Zoella on YouTube). We recently did a competition on 'The perfect New Zealand Experience' and we really enjoyed it! We had 4 groups in each class and my group was called 'All Blacks'. We all had to serve the judges a main meal and a desert, our group served: Mussels and Crayfish in a Pot with lemon juice and coctail sticks and for desert we served Passionfruit Lemoncurd Roulade. What is your favourite food? I look forward to hearing from you!

      I am ten years old. Horotiu is a great place. I moved to this school last year but already know now a lot.

    My name is Charlie (Charlotte) and I love to read and to hang out with friends. My favourite books are Warrior Cats by Erin Hunter, who is really four authors! What is your favourite book? What is your best subject? Mine is English and P.E. At school we are very interested in New Zealand, the wild life, the food and much more. We have been put into groups and are having a competition. For the competition we are baking food from New Zealand, planing a holiday route and creating an invention to make the holiday even better! We are even showing the judges the Haka!     Good morning Horotiu!

    We are so excited to hear from you all!
    It has been a very busy end of term here in Fordham, we have completed our mission to create 'The Perfect New Zealand Experience', and have shown our parents all our hard work in an assembly.
    With all our exciting learning we have run out of time to prepare a Skype link.
    We do hope we can try again after our Easter holidays. We are all off for a two week break and hoping for some sunny weather to recover from our hectic term.

    I am year 6 and have recently turned 11.My favourite sports are horse riding,gymnastics and football, but my favourite one is horse riding,i loovvveeee horses. That sound's really cool hunting deers and pigs, the most i've ever hunted is pigeons:) I've got two brothers William and Louis. William's hunted foxes a few times on the farm with my grandad but never managed to get one. We also have a dog her name is Maya and she's a spaniel. Were getting 2 kittens soon i cant wait.

    hi MJ:) sorry i wrote twice practicaly the same thing i thought it wasnt responding. I have fed dolphins when we used to live in Australia and aparently my mum said we have seen wales but i cant remember. When i was two we traveled NZ for 6 months as my parents where doing WWOOFing (willing workers on organic farms) we passed Hamilton but didnt stop.
